Nori
Nori is one of Reggae's best kept secrets BY HOWARD 'FLAGGA' DUPERLY Caribbean Today Sept 2001 Vol 12 no.10 For the most part, Nori Nori is a local South Florida reggae band. Although the group has several international-caliber appearances to it's credit. These days its appearances are mainly at local venues throughout South Florida. But that should not be taken lightly. Nori Nori is one of the best-kept secrets in reggae. For those who have heard the group, the sounds emanating from their instruments are more than a background, used to facilitate the buzz; it's a terrific opportunity to hear some authentic reggae in an intimate setting. Devin Marsh, who collaborates with various musicians to create the group's unique brand, leads Nori Nori. Marsh himself is a trained musician -vibraphonist- who attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and later the University of Miami. In addition to his regular gigs, he teaches at Coconut Grove Elementary and George Washington Carver Elementary in Miami. As a jazz and classical musician, Marsh first got turned on to reggae after viewing a tape of a Reggae Sunsplash concert. Wowed by the artistry he began playing reggae. So far the group has produced two albums. The most recent -Nori Nori- ranks with the major conscious players of today. But Nori Nori offers even more, because Marsh incorporates his jazz background into his songs, creating unique fusion. Starlight Starbright is a charming example in which the vibraphone lead carries a soft tone, in the realm of a love song. The album also boast some ranking shots, like Jah Say - a complete piece who's beat is accentuated by bellowing horns and guitar lead that position it among the best in conscious reggae. So too is crying - a smooth lover's rock groove. Also included on the album is Swing Your Ting , which served as a sound track for the movie Golf Balls. With the exception of two songs, Marsh, who also sings lead and plays keyboard, pens the album. The horn section includes renowned saxophonist Ed Calle. Tony Tomlinson plays bass and sings lead on Jah Say. Two dub arrangements also complete the package, making the 11-track album a solid collection. To sample the Nori Nori experience - album- or appearances- fans should call 305.667.4667 for information. Websight: www.norinori.net |

| "I think you have some great cuts that will keep the masses moving and grooving. Your band is top of the line, the background vocals and the musical arrangements are exquisite. You are obviously a very talented musician and lyricist with a wide range of vocal ability, which shined on several of the cuts. You're on target on many levels; the children you teach are very fortunate and I know you are doing all to forward your multi-talented self and the Reggae Vibe. I am sorry that I missed your set at the club as I think I would have been very impressed. Some of the cuts that I particular liked, danced to and thought could go somewhere with a single, a commercial, a movie, a hit song, are Every Time I See Her, Starlight Starbright, Crying, Swing your Ting (which I understand was in a movie) and Save the Children. Some children's organizations might like it as a theme song, or background for a commercial, etc." | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

"The 1st time I listened to Nori Nori I loved their music. I first saw them at a Microsoft party in Miami. Before they came on everybody was basically standing around. But once they started to play everybody was dancing and having a great time. I would recommend this cd to anyone who truly loves good music." |
